Multichannel Side-Chaining With Gravitas

In this video, I follow up on my previous review of Fiedler Audio's multi-channel dynamics processor plugin, Gravitas, by demonstrating a unique application that no other plugin is capable of. By using Reaper, a digital audio workstation that supports multi-channel sidechaining, I showcase how Gravitas can be used to sidechain a 16-channel third-order ambisonics track with another 16-channel third-order ambisonics track. Although I use ambisonics for this demonstration, the same technique can be applied to any multi-channel audio format up to 64 channels wide, such as 9.1.6 or 22.2 surround sound.

Throughout the video, I guide viewers through the entire setup process, from creating the ambisonics tracks using plugins like Skydust and AB encoder/decoder, to configuring Gravitas to use the second 16-channel track as the sidechain input. I explain how Gravitas allows users to control the linkage between channels and customize the compressor's reaction to the sidechain signal, creating a unique and flexible tool for creative audio processing. While some may argue that this technique compromises the integrity of the ambisonics signal, I maintain that if it sounds good, it is good, and that Gravitas' ability to compress one ambisonic signal with another is a testament to its versatility and usefulness in a variety of applications.
